this was overhyped to the moon. Its a great film that need close attention and maybe rewatching which is something I actually like. Throughout the movie the audience is sophie a young person who couldnt understand what her dad was going through. As the movie ended I was confused. Had the rave be a significant event between him and sophies mom? I was confused and it took a bit for me to realise what the true meaning of the whole movie was. To say i enjoyed every aspect of the movie is a lie. I had found it boring at times because "nothing was going on" with only glimpses of the imagination of sophies dad. Thats when it clicked. I was anticipating something realising that the "something" had already happen and we are viewing it in older sophies eyes. The whole point of sophies holiday was that her dad wanted it to be the best. In older sophies eyes she realises the pain her dad had been going through. Was the hype worth it no. But the movie's message is beautiful. As i grow/mature up i will definitely appreciate this more.
Edit after 1 day/rant:This movie is genuinely beautiful. From the colour tones of scenes that happen at night makes it feel extremely nostalgic. It is truly a masterpiece and deserves it hype and deserves even more recognition. From the reviews ive seen on this film have primarily been personal connections from dads who see themselves in Calum. To me I am neither a man with a child or a child with a dad that had killed himself. This movie genuinely made me realise so much things in my life. So ive raised it from 4 stars to 5 stars lmao. The concept of the movie kind of baffles me. Its a masterpiece yet why does it seem so simplistic? The answer is simple. These issues arent talked about enough. Especially in a society where a traditional man must keep in thier emotions and never cry. I was never tought that by my parents directly yet it was still drilled into my head. Whatever connection we feel in this movie is only something we subconsciously avoid. This movie makes a person go face to face, toe to toe with thier problems/past.
