Red Desert
*'it's no use worrying about me that's all anyone's done for months. i see the doctors who tell me all about myself, but it's when im alone that i feel sick! i can't take it anymore! [...] there's something terrible about reality and i don't know what it is. no one will tell me.'*
one of my new favourite movies ever so i will be glazing the pants off of it here. monica vitti gives one of the most captivating performances i've ever seen in this film. each mannerism and expression left me in awe. you fall in love with her character completely.
the film itself dealt with themes very personal to my heart, alienation from society, an intense love for the world, yet an inability to figure out your place in the society it holds. after a traumatic event it's so common to find yourself reassessing the world you live in, unable to become an active participant and more of an observer. i think the film shows this so so well, in a way that completely breaks your heart.
it's also just one of the most beautiful films visually to watch ever. every scene, every outfit, every line of dialogue feels so intentional i think you can appreciate it as a well made film even if it doesn't resonate as intensely.
i paused so many times to write down some of my favorite lines, so here's some more i really really enjoyed
'i can't look at the sea too long. or i lose interest in what's happening on land.'
'what are you scared of?
'streets, factories, colours, people -everything!'
'i wonder if there's some place in this world where people go to get better. probably not.'
wonderful beautiful film, so so glad i watched. must watch more antonioni now...
