Sideways
Wow. Paul giamatti is so sad. Simultaneously funnier and sadder on my second watch. Love that they don’t play him like a victim, cause this could’ve so easily been a male manipulator movie. Certainly many things in this movie are not his fault, but they also play him as guy who wallows in the pain of something that ended 2 years ago. He's been mistreated, but he's also mistreated himself and the people around him because of that. He’s an alcoholic, which they never overtly say, which is another reason that I love this movie. It doesn’t baby the audience and say “this is how he’s feeling” “this is why he acts this way”. It makes it more rewarding to rewatch, because as you get older you learn more about life and experience. I resonated so much more with this on a 2nd watch and it actually hit me harder. And the ending? Try and fail to find a better way to seal this movie. Definitely paynes best written film, cause the dialogue is fucking amazing, but I don’t know where I’d rank this among election, the holdovers, and Nebraska. WHERE IS GIAMATTIS OSCAR GUYS.
