What a horrifying underrated gem, such a heartbreaking story. A true tragedy, while Grave of the Fireflies is still the better movie this movie should absolutely not be skipped just because of similarities, and fans of Grave of the Fireflies with love this movie too. The largest difference between the two movies is undoubtably the tone, this one takes on a much more positive tone throughout many parts and ultimately ends with a positive message of resilience despite the hardships. My only probably with this film is unfortunately that its age shows a bit with the voice acting, music, and overall sound design, the animation is the older style as well but doesn't bother me. The main issue for me overall that prevents this from being rated any higher is just that it doesn't feel as if you are given enough time to linger on certain scenes, especially at the very end. Still an amazing watch, it would be awesome to see an anime like this done in the modern age that isn't Grave of the Fireflies, because stories like these are so real and heartbreaking.
