Nightcrawler
Nightcrawler is very entertaining, and Jake Gyllenhaal is perfect for this role, yet it feels like it is missing just a little bit from being a truly amazing movie. One issue is that several key developments in this film are told to the viewer rather than shown. There is a lot left offscreen, such as his relationship with the news director or what happens to the other news cameraman, that the movie could have benefited from including. This is an amazingly unique film that seems to give up many things for the sake of its “unconventional ending.” I also think the film could have benefited from developing its side characters more and expanding its scope beyond Lou’s perspective. Despite my negative tone, I still really liked this movie and think that it has very interesting things to say about how our society can reward morally dubious actions.
