A compassionate portrait of loneliness, grief, and love, that grounds you with quiet devastation. Gosling’s tender portrayal of Lars feels as resonant as ever in the present atmosphere of loneliness.

I don’t know how to feel about this movie I liked aspects of it. I almost think it could’ve been interesting to write it with us following the wife’s perspective from the beginning. Because when he’s in the kitchen with his wife, they’re having the conversation of all the hints she saw- I kept thinking I’d rather have seen those scenes and see the tension build rather than have them retroactively describe all these tense moments that happened before the time period of the film in order for the plot to work. The concert thing could’ve been skipped altogether. Although I did love Lady Raven. I loved that she was clever and not just another trope of the vapid young popstar. I think it had so much potential to be a tense thriller but it just had too many plot points to fit in to let any of the suspense actually build. It wanted to be Gone Girl tension but with the pacing of an Bourne type action movie.

it’s a rom com but like it’s her loving her community and friends. and then they snuck a husband in at the end to make it qualify as a rom com. and I mean this so positively. like her life is full as hell! and it centered around her friends! watching this in the loneliness epidemic post covid antisocial years, I find it actually so touching that this, like, traditional 2000s rom-com is just a woman unapologetically building a village in her life and centering her friends on the same level as immediate family.

God this one will stay with me. This gorgeous, heartbreaking gem.
