Rope
still as amazing as when I first watched this 🚬 , my favourite hitchcock and one of my favorites of all time. john dall is actually just amazing in this and anyone who knows me know i love farley granger here.
a bit of a history lesson but during its theatrical run back in the 1940s, it was highly controversial and definitely did badly (for a hitchcock flick) because this is actually an adaptation from a play of the same title, rope (1929), by patrick hamilton. the play was based on a real murder done by 2 university students who planned the “perfect murder” of a 14-year-old boy just five years prior to the creation of the play, and one of the key aspects of this case is that the fact that the perpetrators were homosexuals. one of the reasons why they didn’t get the death penalty is because being a homosexual proved they were “perverts” and that they were “insane”. this case has been adapted to a handful of movies and plays, compulsion (1959) is another adaptation that ive watched and enjoyed. anyways, i always thought stewart was kinda out of place in this cast list and watching the doc behind this (rope unleashed) its revealed that hitchcock planned to hire cary grant (funny because he’s name dropped in the movie) & montgomery cliff but they rejected because rupert was supposed to be a homosexual too. i think lawrence said it best when he said that stewart was good as a detective but not really as someone who had a relationship with the two perpetrators.
anyways kenneth x janet x david
