Stop Making Sense
confession time: i have been actively listening to talking heads and their 1983 live album stop making sense since december 2023, and this was my first time watching the concert film because i couldn’t find it anywhere except youtube and that wouldn’t do it justice so i waited it out. i knew a bit of what was going on onstage through the grapevine and had listened to the live album on repeat, but i mostly stayed in the dark so i could appreciate the film when i could see it.
and what a film that was. what starts off so bare-bones, nervous and pensive, evolves into an exhilarating, larger-than-life celebration of existence, of emotion, of love and just being as each band member is added song by song.
it was absolutely mind-blowing to watch this. it felt like a catharsis for me, seeing the way i think and feel and interact with music displayed so well with fantastic direction from jonathan demme that hooks into you and never lets go. everyone gave it their all, every drum beat and synth riff and guitar solo tight and passionate. from “psycho killer” to “crosseyed and painless”, the momentum never stops and never gets old. it was so, so awesome to see what i’ve heard on the album actually be performed, thanks to the band’s stage presence and pure groove as well as demme’s standout filmmaking.
i have to correct my previous statement. this is not a “concert film.” this is lightning in a bottle and living, breathing proof of the power of music.
