Hamnet
"to be or not to be"
well SHIIITTT. the entire time i was js sitting there praying "pls keep this child safe" even though i already knew hamnet shakespeare dies at 11 and that the grief is literally the whole plot. like fuck. one of my fav things about this is how it barely focuses on william himself and more focuses on agnes n how grief consumes her life. i also rlly like the buildup of the film how it literally starts from the very beginning. props to the writers for being able to encapsulate that much story into one movie while also staying on track and not making it feel rushed. the idea that this loss eventually turned into hamlet makes it soooo much worse bcs now it doesnt feel like literature and i can only see it as a father trying to survive the worst thing that could ever happen to him through writing FUCK.
plus the whole orpheus eurydice parallel bitch shut the front door u people are sick in the head actually. i am wrecked mostly bcs i am obsessed with that myth so the second i realized what the film was doing with it i kind of just died. william is basically orpheus but hes using literature instead of music to try and bring back a lossed love except instead of eurydice its their son through hamlet meanwhile agnes is basically stuck in a cycle of grief the entire film. what GAGGEEDDDD me was that the myth literally warns u not to look back but this reinterpretation through the shakespeares literally changes the ending of the myth and argues that looking back is the ONLY way to survive it. imagine reinventing one of the greeaattesssttt tragedies in literature bcs u couldnt process ur feelings normally. honestly classic shakespeare behavior good for him. bcs emotions are WHAT?????? FUNDAMENTAL.
and omg the gasp i gusped realizing that THE “to be or not to be” speech in hamlet might actually come from this grief???????? ive NEVER thought about it that way omg i like rethunk my entire life that whole excerpt is literally about questioning whether its easier to exist with pain or not exist at all so watching this n then thinking about that again realizing that william shakespeare mightve wrote that about his OWN PERSONAL EXPERIENCE please shut the fuck up. now it doesnt even sound philosophical anym it js sounds like a FUCKING FATHER trying to process unbearable loss. isnt that fucking dandy
what i loved about the ending tho is how the whole movie ends up being about how differently people cope with grief. agnes saw william leaving and throwing himself into theatre n it feels to her like hes abandoned them or like hes trying to forget hamnet entirely. from her perspective it js looks cold and distant but really thats the only way he knows how to process it aka by turning it into something n by putting the grief somewhere outside of himself PLS he literally didnt forget he js mourned in an entirely different way like bitch great.
also JESSIE BUCKLEY???? unREAAALL. genuinely some of the most devastating acting ive seen in a long time. your oscar is waiting for you holy shit.
maybe the part that messed with me most is the fact that ive literally been inside shakespeares house in stratford upon avon. literally walked through the entire house and stood at the exact spot that hamnet is believed to have died so watching this story play out on screen knowing ive physically BEEN in the space where this whole ordeal happened like 400 years ago is soo surreal. genuinely felt like my emotional stability was being personally targeted.
me and dru have literally never been so silent watching a movie in our lives. like we were js sitting there crying in complete silence full on heaving in our seats. we were both so entranced omg not even whispering not reacting js staring at the screen whilst tears were like slowly running down our cheeks.
i feel like this movie actually requires a certain level of thinking to fully get what its doing so respectfully if you watched it n thought it was boring or pointless i truly dooontttt know what to tell you. we may simply not be operating on the same wavelength n thats okay but i dont want to hear shiiiittttttttt
anyways beautiful film emotionally devastating NEVER want to experience that again
