Silence
So happy I finally rewatched this.
It is hands down Scorsese’s best film.
A beautiful and powerful masterpiece, that brought me near to tears on multiple occasions.
The sheer sincerity and respect the arguments of both sides are given is incredibly impressive. It makes for dialogues that leave you hanging on every word like a man begging for water.
I am however genuinely shocked that some people will defend the Japanese state in this film because of how much this modern “colonialism bad” lens has rotted their brain. Colonialism was bad in many respects. It does not however justify the torture and genocide of thousands at the hands of a totalitarian state.
There is a common thread across the films I have watched lately.
