Sing Sing
My top movie of 2024
This is truly, truly, beautiful work. It feels equally like a therapy session throughout and a study of human resilience, of love, of grief, and of loss. When those end credits come in, and you see the actors casted as themselves, it puts the whole thing into perspective.
This is not an idealistic dream; this can happen, it has happened, and continues to happen. In the face of a deeply flawed system, of a slippery slope of bad decisions and stigmas, the human spirit never really breaks. Cool Hand Luke but with incredible vulnerability.
And Colman Domingo somehow makes prison clothes fashionable.
