Annette
this is my second watch of this film, although i’ve been listening to the soundtrack on a near constant loop. shit goes so fucking hard.
ultimately i think that annette is a story about love. ann loves herself, loves protecting her peace, but made a mistake by letting henry in. henry clearly hates himself, but he loves control and power, showing that by killing ann and the conductor and exploiting annette. the conductor loves ann, and annette, and we see that by how softly “we love each other so much” is supposed to be sung. i would go so far as to say that love and control are synonymous to henry, which gives what annette says to him at the end “now you have nothing to love” all the more gut wrenching. he has nothing to love in prison because he has nothing to control. he can’t really love annette because he can’t control her anymore
