It Follows
Not sure what stopped this from clicking with me on previous watches but holy shit I thought this was perfect this time round. On the surface it works as an incredibly fresh take on slasher tropes by personifying the idea that “sex = death” and turning that abstract idea into the killer itself, beneath that though is a great coming of age story set against a backdrop of urban decay. What stood out to me the most this time round was how the film felt suspended in time, from the very on the nose use of old tv’s to more subtle shots of stagnant water, it was as though the world around them was frozen. Nothing is able to progress forward and our characters are stuck in a limbo between adolescence and adulthood, surrounded by broken homes in both the familial and literal sense.
Also it was just really refreshing to watch a genuinely scary modern horror film after being severely let down by the offerings of the past couple years. Crazy how Maika Monroe is in one of the best horrors of the 2010’s and one of the worst of the 2020’s… fuck you longlegs I’m still annoyed at how shite you were.
