Phantom Thread
88/100
Everything about this film is luxurious, from Greenwood’s magical score to the fine details of Reynolds’ beautiful dressmaking. But underlying that luxury is Reynolds’ painstaking cycle perfection and neglect that give the film an uncomfortable edge.
I found the three main characters to be fascinating, with each possessing a unique tenacity. The quiet strength of Alma and Cyril in particular was thought-provoking: while Alma jockeyed for control and autonomy within the Woodcock house, Cyril keenly managed Alma’s fragile relationship with Reynolds. And somehow PTA tied this dynamic together perfectly in a scene where Reynolds accepts his own poisoning by savoring an omelette of all things. Incredible stuff.
