La Notte
Every Antonioni film has the most devastating ending ever that lingers with you for a long time after watching.
Before this was my least favorite of the trilogy, but now I'm not sure how to rank them besides putting L'avventura at number one of course. On second watch, I think I like this one even more than I did before. This film has some of the best cinematography of any movie I have ever seen and as a photographer and aspiring cinematographer it is definitely an inspiration. There are shots in this that just live rent free in my head. The hospital scene in the beginning is a master class in how to block and edit a dialogue sequence without using the classic shot-reverse-shot structure.
The use of architecture in this is stunning. While more prominent in L'eclisse, Antonioni frames the characters against the modern architecture of post-war Milan to create stunning compositions where the human body is juxtaposed against the modernist design.
