Despite how much I adore both Yi Yi and A Brighter Summer Day, I must admit that this is probably Edward Yang's true masterpiece. Having just started a university course in media convergence it felt like the perfect time to rewatch this film. It is seemingly a perfect portrait of the post modern landscape of late stage capitalism. Fredric Jameson was right in calling this THE post modern film. As many have said, this makes for a great double feature with Antonioni's Blow-up.
The ending of the film is a masterclass in great filmmaking and this film has some the greatest use of architecture in film.
Also yes, I really do envy the photographer's studio/darkroom set up. Having something like he has is definitely a dream for anyone who loves analog black and white photography as much as I do.
