Heat

"Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner."
Heat is noir, captivating and tense, a manic Pacino paired with a cold DeNiro. A character dynamic for the ages in a thrilling heist film grounded in vivid realism that centers over obsession and the path of a devotion that leaves you blind to all else.
The film is raw, it captures a bright noir and an atmospheric grittiness in the crime we see unfold and the result it leaves behind. Not only of the crime, but of life after your dues have been paid as we see in Donald, who is put back into criminal affairs due to struggling to find work after prison. Or the result after the crime in the family of the murdered hooker, distraught and inconsolable. The scenes themselves are impactful during and after, but the before is just as methodical in its approach.
Neil is fuelled by and for crime and Hanna’s sole drive is to stop it. Mann pits two of the most obsessed in a battle of wits, and shows us why they’re the same. Everything is paralleled, their lives are opposing mirrors of the other. They are impervious to human connection, only true to their respective crafts.
Eventually they experience punishment. They receive consequences for living a disconnected lie among those who care for them. Hanna’s step daughter attempts suicide, and at the end of the movie DeNiro has to leave his lover. The way they approach their lives leaves destruction in its wake. Broken hearts and souls in pursuit of justice — or injustice.
In a movie that treats both sides as the lead, the ending is a beautiful 50/50 sequence, and the culmination of everything between the two men. It’s anyone’s game, the movie leads you to believe either can win, both having been punished regardless. It’s tense, it’s dramatic, it’s enthralling through the chase to the final standoff to the end, to the victor. They hold hands in respect, in recognition. They know they are cut from the same cloth. A brilliant film, a Mann masterpiece.
