Saving Face
Talk about the chinese representation oh my gosh
One of the first scenes ever and I'm immediately thrusted into those chinese dinner parties that i'm always forced to attend again
Her mother is so gorgeous its not funny like i'd LOVE to be your scandalous younger aged lover
"I'm not a bad mother. My daughter is not gay." like oh okay
I can't lie and say I didn't cry because I did, I relate a lot to Wil and the conversation with her mom just reminds me of the impending doom I'll have with my own soon. The immediate shut down and how quick the conversation ended and then them not speaking about it until a few weeks later is such a common thing chinese parents do and Wil explaining that her mom does know, she just ignores it is such a relatable thing for me.
The need to submit to chinese family honor and faith is so tiring and I love that about Ma's character, the way it impacts her and her actions into the movie and the way she lets go and accepts her love. And i love that in the end of the movie, people still respect her. Especially her father because one of the worst things to happen for you is to not be accepted into your family again.
I really enjoyed the wedding scene and the gossip the other mothers would have. The wedding scene is so hilarious and the gossip scenes are so accurate to the gossip the asian mothers and grandmothers get onto.
Wil and Vivian's relationship is so dear to me. The waiting, the guessing, the rejection is just so chefs kiss. Another reason why I relate to Wil, I fear. I love that they get together in the end and it wasn't sad. And I love that they had an interaction when they were younger, because of course they did.
