Steins;Gate
I have no idea how it took me three watches before I reviewed this.
Steins;Gate isn't just my favorite anime series, it is one of my favorite pieces of media period. From the animation, characters, story, voice acting, and ost, everything in this series is perfect.
Time travel is a difficult topic to conceptualize, with paradoxes and complicated processes abound, leaving a major obstacle to any sci fi writer. Steins;Gate's concept of world lines and divergence is probably the best explanation of time travel I've ever seen, using simple explanation with the influence of much more complicated concepts weaved together perfectly and created an extremely strong backbone for the story to rely on. This allows for the fantastic story to flow more naturally and feel more compelling.
This is one of the best cast of characters in any series. From the main four lab members, to the less involved characters, everyone has a distinct and interesting personality that is allowed to shine at different moments in the show. Even the characters with less screen time and influence have emotionally stirring moments that feel just as earned as any involving the main group. The interactions and dynamics between all the characters, especially Okabe and Kurisu (best girl), are entertaining to follow and are a major reason why the story is so impactful.
Steins;Gate takes an extremely interesting concept and well fleshed out and interesting characters, and crafts a masterful story around them. The story of isolation and determination keeps me on the edge of my seat each time I've watched the series. From the light-hearted moments, to the emotionally crushing, the entirety of the series keeps the viewer invested and engaged. A slower start filled with character introduction and story establishment allows for a more powerful impact once the more dramatic moments play out, especially after a major moment midway through the season. The balance of fun and emotional moments is worked together perfectly as the series progresses.
Hacking to the Gate is one of the greatest anime openings ever.
The easiest 10/10 I've ever given. I love this series so much. One of my favorite things ever.
