Sentimental Value
I know it’s been hard for you. I recognise myself in you.
But you’re so goddamn angry. It’s hard to love someone who’s so full of rage.
Right? You don’t want to be alone forever.
I genuinely believe that no matter what your relationship with you father’s like, this will hit for the eldest daughters.
on nora’s side, we got to see how growing up with the kind of relationship she has had with her dad—or the lack thereof—affected every aspects of her life now. we even saw how differently it has affected her sister; *“There’s one major difference in the way we grew up. I had you.” *i instantly cried.
on gustav’s side, we got to see not only how he was feeling behind his daughters but also his trauma, why he is the way he is, and not to justify his actions, but just to build context and empathy. i don’t think i’ve ever seen any of stellan’s films where he really ACTED like this and wow it hurt (complimentary).
and the HOUSE, as someone who is still living in a house that’s been with my family since before my parents were even married, it just hit even harder.
can’t help but think that the theme of this movie is quite like the the beautiful drama version of Hereditary.*
*
the final scene was DIABOLICAL btw.*

lastly, it really got me thinking, if gustav was struggling with his past and making amends, and so he coped by doing the one thing he’s good at—filmmaking—then does this say anything about joachim trier?
