Superman
It’s solid, though it feels like a sequel to a movie we don’t have and vaguely know.
Starting Clark as a year three Superman was definitely a bold move for Gunn and it wasn’t entirely a bad move. We know who Superman is as a character, we know Lois, we know Lex… however it didn’t help but make me feel like we’re watching the big conflict that a prior movie set up. Pieces are all there but context for them isn’t and it’s why it leads me to say it’s like a sequel movie.
For new viewers of the franchise, it might feel a little overwhelming and a tad bit chaotic. For Superman fans, it’s a home run. Cast is great (as per usual for an Gunn film) but I’d be lying if I said Corenswet and Fillion didn’t stand above the rest. Absolute embodiments of their respective characters. Also, Gunn has made his visual style quite clear and seeing his directorial mark on this movie is quite appreciated.
It’s not perfect, but it knows what makes Superman Superman and it rocks.
