Sentimental Value
I find myself struggling to put my thoughts together. There are too many things to unpack.
Performances: Fanning keeps on surprising me and I’m here for it. Skargard doesn’t fall behind either, he’s unbelievably good. Lastly, Reinseve, she’s the core of the film, she puts the film on her back and carries it so easily. Every time Nora is on screen, I can’t help but feel her pain, her sadness. The vulnerability between people that is shown on this film is astonishing.
Now to talk about the actual film. Seems like Dad represented this sort of absence in their lives, he lacks the ability to connect with them either due to his own personal suffering or because he truly doesn’t care, but once he did start to care he really doesn’t know how to connect with his kids. He uses his work and his film to connect with them, he understands that Nora will never be able to connect with him unless it’s through acting and performing. He doesn’t know his daughter Nora and yet he was able to write this script that describes her to a very deep level, but “how?” That’s the question I can’t fully answer, perhaps is due to him having those same feelings or experiencing them very closely through his mother.
Nora it’s this complex character that not every director could execute the way T did.
Ultimately, this film is AMAZING. It’s vulnerable, it’s complex, it’s emotional, it’s a little bit of everything.
