Django Unchained
“And her name is Broomhilda von Schafts?”
“Two weeks in Boston”
“And i’m supposed to believe your black ass”
The freedman’s revenge
Some stuff I took a specific notice too (was too lazy to do a running commentary):
I definitely think this movie could’ve shown the brutality of slavery a bit more. I do agree with the liberal usage of ‘n**r’, I hope the intention behind this wasn’t sensationalised.
Maybe i’m too sensitive but I could barely watch some of the scenes here (like when Broomhilda was getting whipped and the scene after that) you gotta remember that this stuff actually happened. Also when Django mentioned the Bible it really hit viscerally.
The part where Django asks about the story of Brünhilde and his impulsiveness to conclude parts of the story: he had his childhood stripped away, what he never got to experience growing up. I see an almost father-son relationship developing here with Schultz.
In the second elimination: Django shows empathy and guilt to those who wronged him, just because the bounty has his son with him. Also he is semi-illiterate, which is actually impressive.
The way slaves mind their own business when other slaves are getting tortured. Ignoring danger is a skill.
Mandingo fighting: two black men beating each other to death; sadistic.. crude. Not even in a professional-esque manner, but in the attic of a posh tuscan home with just two people watching, while other black people can only observe. Fighting in your brother’s blood. Some of these people believe they are above the system (like the lady on the couch & Steven). Mentally trapped.
Not sure if Django gets too carried away with being freed here.
Steven like Judas
Fun ending (76 years Steven)
RIP SCHULTZ AND D’ARTAGNAN
The movie was overall great
Maybe I just value relationships too much.
Even though there were some things I though could’ve been better:
First 5-star.
Slavery was worse than you could ever imagine. Remember, slavery was less than 200 years ago. Indentured servitude was less than 100 years ago. The civil rights movement was barely 60 years ago. The modern slave trade still exists. The 13th amendment still exists.
Auf wiedersehen
