Arrival
this film is so powerful.
for a film about language i’m always left speechless at the end. on this rewatch i was particularly overwhelmed with tears. idk it just really hit me hard this time. as someone who is infatuated with language and linguistics arrival is right up my alley but the direction cinematography soundtrack and acting from amy adams is all just so beyond amazing.
arrival really drives home that communication is the keystone of civilization, of life. interaction with others, with other cultures it’s something distinct and magical. i cant even put into words what this movie makes me feel so i’m going to stop trying.
something i would just like to add that the eytmology of “arrive” is from the latin “ad + ripa” or “to shore” so i like to think the title of course references the arrival of the aliens but also references that learning a new language and more generally just aquiring knowledge is like reaching the shore of a never before seen land. a new world.
