what makes Savitramma's story feel so personal is how relatable everything she goes thru is. Not to make a Bawaal-core comparison, but everything that Savitri gaaru goes thru is something we (or someone we know) can relate to and understand. from the stubbornness of "naa valla avthundi" to trusting the wrong man to trusting the wrong people to turning towards things like alcohol and drugs for peace, these are all things that we see in our own lives or the lives of people who are very close to us, of course in a much lighter manner. it's beyond me how despite the aid that she gave to so many people and the way she thought of everyone as her own, she found herself turning to something like alcohol for help. I literally started tearing up when she held the bottle of alcohol close to her when her whole house was set on fire, gave me the chills. anthati superstar ni support cheyyadaaniki evaru lera, anthati Mahanati ne antha mandhi mosam chese vaallu unnara anipisthundi and it says a lot about our society that quite literally hasn't changed.

dulquer salmaan as gemini ganesan is such a miscast cuz wdym I'm supposed to internally call him an a-hole 💔
jokes apart, it boggles my mind how a person's childhood can impact their adulthood to such extent. the lack of a dad figure in her life pushed her towards trusting a guy like gemini ganesan with all her heart even after she came to realize that he was still with Alamelu gaaru and Pushpavalli gaaru at the time (mind you she's not someone who gives on her self-respect that easily) (this same concept can be seen with the next generation with Pushpavalli's daughter Bhanurekha gaaru but we'll talk about her case another time). and the way gemini ganesan had his own charm didn't help either, we could definitely see why Savitri gaaru chose to marry him (guys he 1. recognized his ammadi 2. on a phone call 3. when she didn't even utter a single word). she might be known as a homewrecker, she met him when she was 14 (13 according to other sources) and married him when she was 17, so first of all Savitramma was groomed. secondly, she didn't know that he was married until after she surrendered to his love. what better could she have done?
at the end of the day, everyone was in the wrong in her story, but the main villain was her own self. her mondithanam that made us giggle in the beginning made us internally scream "DON'T DO IT PLEASE" by the end of it. her innocence that made us fall in love with her in the beginning was the same innocence we felt bad about when Sathyam, covered in gold, comes back to see her. her compassion that we praise at the beginning of the film was the same compassion we praise by the end of the film, this time with eyes full of tears. Savitramma's life isn't just a story, it's a reminder of how confidence and virtue can become the cause of self-destruction. we walk away haunted by the experiences of an actress we adore on screen who held so much love within her only to not get the same love in return.
aakasa veedhilo andhala jabili. anaganaga, oka Mahanati.
may Savitri gaaru rest in peace.
(sorry to all the ocd people like me but I didn't capitalize gemini's name on purpose.)
