M
Is this a horror movie? Ermmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. M is a really interesting commentary and a brilliant thriller way ahead of its time it’s crazy. It’s genuinely insane how well this holds up to today like a lot of mysteries and thrillers like silence of the lambs seven zodiac and usual suspects all lend themselves to this movie in so many ways. Like the general chase for the killer is engaging and like literally the original cat and mouse police murderer chase. Where this movie splits off and becomes so much more than a thriller mystery is with the mob and the ending. I’m not gonna spoil it but I did not expect the movie to go there and ask those questions it was brilliant. Like it’s poetic and genuinely an amazing twist on the audience themselves if that makes sense. Like what does the m REALLY stand for it’s so interesting. It also has quite a bit of bold commentary on the police and the general population. I imagine the director looking outside his window and giving an angry look because this film isn’t nice to anyone. No one person is seen as completely innocent here except for the children. And it’s written in such a thought provoking manner and somehow doesn’t make this approach seem immature in fact it makes it feel so mature and brilliant. Peter Lorne gives an incredible visceral and genuine performance I couldn’t take my sight off his big bold bulging eyes. The editing is also genuinely fucking incredible like I totally see a world where the movie is far less interesting because it didn’t use its great cuts to action or set to make all the dialogue feel real. The sound was also probably revolutionary or whatever bc 1931 with the whistle being a leitmotif prob the first ever but I really would’ve liked a bit less silence like it made the tense moments less tense because there was just a lot of silence throughout yknow. Like when they would try to use it to create suspense I didn’t really feel it. It’s fine though 1931 was like early early sound so. But like when I see the attempt I am shocked because like it just feels so modern yknow. The cinematography is also like surprisingly really great and echos a lot of modern films techniques in creating tension and just a great use of what’s seen and what’s not. Like I think this film is genuinely timeless it’s that good. This one feels like snitching on your friend in elementary school and seeing them stare at you from the timeout corner.
