This is definitely one of those "if you know you know" sort of short films because it's very culture-specific in its subjects. But for anyone with experience in Caribbean cultures, this will probably resonate on some level.
The plot is hidden behind the words of the protagonist. But there is a story here, cleverly masked, but revealed through the pairing of words and images. The girl and the bed are a prime example. So many unspoken questions linger there. What is love, what is sex, if the meaning is never explained? They might as well learn from the donkeys in the field. The paradigms all feel broken, in a strikingly human way. This is a snapshot of a shattered world.
Watching this for the first time was honestly one of the most intense and emotional experiences I've ever had watching a short film. I felt so much dread in the climactic moment toward the end. The sound design is truly inspired.
Maybe it's just me. But dang. 5/5
