First Reformed
“If only I could pray.”
I loved this and it also made me sick to my stomach (maybe I need the whiskey-pepto combo)
The biblical references here are something crazy. Michael, the warrior and archangel. Mary, the mother and protector. Joseph, “the boy thrown down the well.”
I imagine a lot of people who are spiritual, religious, or deeply motivated by a cause like environmentalism can relate to the despair and hopelessness you see in Toller and Michael. It’s really dark, and really heavy, and I really don’t think there’s any other way to talk about climate change.
I’m really appreciative of an ambiguous ending so this one will just float around in my mind for a while. Ouch!
