Eraserhead
"In Heaven, everything is fine."
The most avantgarde film i have ever watched. This is my first entry into David Lynch’s filmography. And yeah, it succeeded in terrifying me.
Eraserhead is an exploration of the fear and anxiety of parenthood. The most disturbing thing about the film is that it is a surreal horror film that meant to feel like a nightmare. It contains body horror in the form of a mutant baby with a fleshy, E.T.-like, or alien look. That thing is not a mutant; it is a demon.
The second thing I admired from the start is the claustrophobic background soundscape. With its industrial environment—radiators, pipes, night crickets, and baby crys —it felt like it was screaming in my ear. It makes it hard for me to breathe and puts me in a state of fear. Eraserhead has scenes where the surreal nightmare world connects to the real world, showing some metaphor, i suppose, although it was just a dream for Henry.
Lastly, the Lady in the Radiator and the foreshadows of the demon baby. There is a simple story where a creature-like lady lives in the radiator beside Henry’s bed. It forms a stage for her singing performances; although she only appears when Henry is alone, her performance soothes Henry’s heart, singing him to bed. It feels like she is the only "person" who understands what Henry feels. The foreshadowing of the grown-up demon baby is something unexpected and horrifying to see. It was just a second glance, but you might instantly recognize it. It makes you wonder what would have happened if Henry had let the baby grow up. P.S. There is actually a hilarious scene where the baby laughing lol, it was killing me in middle of the night.
