Poor Things
This was so gorgeous. I’m so obsessed with the different lenses used throughout and the decision to use sets for each city instead of filming in the actual location, it makes it so much more magical and feels like we’re seeing it as a child would. The title cards for each location were amazing, Emma Stone was perfect, and I loved the switch up to color. I can understand where some of the criticism of this film is coming from, it IS weird that men are lusting after Bella who is basically a large baby in the beginning. It is perverted and opportunistic, but the message isn’t that that’s okay??? Bella has been given a strange gift to be reborn and has the means to explore the magical world with a completely uninhibited mind and body to do so, and people will come along to take advantage of that naivety. By the time we are grown up enough to experience the world as it is, we are already weighed down by societal norms and expectations, but she is not. Bella holds all the good and bad that life has to offer with ease, as she herself lives in the body of a woman whom we can assume was a cruel person. She doesn’t allow that to warp her own mind. She is a child and she is her own mother all at once, giving herself permission to see everything through trial and error, experimenting life like a true scientist. She’s a “changingable feast”, she reads Emerson, she comes and goes as she pleases. “We must experience everything- not just the good, but degradation, horror, sadness, and we can know the world. And when we know the world, the world is ours.” ♥️ Need to rewatch ASAP, this is my favorite movie that came out in 2023.
