Almost Famous
This is the one film that's been in my watchlist forever and I have constantly thought about watching well since highschool, and I really regret waiting as long as I did to finally watch it. I imagine watching this in highschool when I was well deep into classic rock and 60/70s culture would've been earth shattering for teenage me. The teenage girl that felt so disconnected to her generation would've absolutely fell madly in love with this, and in a way the 21 year old me now still feels a bit of that love for this movie too.
I've well evolved past the whiny bullshit that is the "born in the wrong generation" mentality, and really if anything I don't gaze at the 70s or 60s with much love anymore as I once had.
The Beatles and The Who, both bands mentioned in the film with the latter heavily so, were my two first loves at 16. The Who poster that hangs in Williams room is one I also have that is currently still pinned on my wall, despite honestly hardly even listening to them anymore. At 16 though, that wasn't the case one bit, they were everything to me just as was The Beatles. When I say my first loves, I really do mean it although I wish personally it was something much cooler. I bought Rubber Soul and The Who Sell Out as some of my first vinyl without even having a proper player, just so I could experience and share that I had such relics of music. All my art went towards portrait of these godly rockstars that as I viewed as everything; a portrait of George Harrison even winning my towns local art show. I mean jesus christ, my graduation cap was of The Who with lyrics to 1921; I was in deep and obsessed. I was my own modern day version of a Band-Aid, but without anything besides the music and how that inspired me. I was absolutely a fucking loser, but how I yearned and dreamed of being a "groupie" in the 70s and actually experiencing the music that kept me sane during some shit years.
Now with hindsight, I wouldn't wish the groupie experience for anyone, epecially my younger self. A great deal of the rock legends I idolized are, in fact, really shitty people that deserve nothing of such. Keith Moon was the epitome of cool to my 16 year old heart, now he's just another shitty troubled man that I can only respect for drumming. I supposed I'm not as starstruck or happy as I was then as a teenager, but I felt a spark of that in this movie now in my 20s. It's a really special movie, and younger me would've devoured it 💛
