The Master

“If you figure a way to live without serving a master, any master, then let the rest of us know, will you? For you'd be the first person in the history of the world.”
The Master is a very perplexing piece of cinema that is almost hypnotic and showcases PTA in his full form. Paul Thomas Anderson is a master of his craft and creates another technical, raw, authentic, masterpiece. One of the best scenes that Anderson creates ever is the processing scene between the primitive, animalistic Freddie Quell played by Joaquin Phoenix and the methodical, slimy, Lancaster Dodd played by Phillip Seymour Hoffman. The scene showcases life and all its beauties and horrors. It also represents the theoretical duality of the brain which is this idea which one is the analytical brain while the other being the primitive brain. The best part of that scene is when Quell has to answer Dodds questions at a rapid pace. This shows the quintessential thoughts of Quell and him at his purest which breaks down Quell into his own enigma which not only forms him but the entirety of the human race.
