Speed Racer
When this came out, people said it sucked. The truth is, the world wasn’t ready for Speed Racer. I fucking LOVE this movie. Even as a kid I was a huge Speed Racer fan. I mean I’ve seen just about every piece of Speed Racer media out there. When I play racing games, I always model a car after the Mach 5. I even have a little hot wheels car of the Mach 5 at my desk at the office. The 2008 live action is probably the best live action anime adaptation we’ve ever had. It doesn’t ever take itself too seriously, or try to be something it’s not. It’s bright, and colorful, and just a lot of fun. Exactly like a cartoon on real life should be. Everyone absolutely nails their roles, I mean John Goodman was born to play Pops Racer. The driving scenes are great, especially the Grand Prix. The moral of the story being that Capitalism is bad, and that the ultra wealthy shouldn’t always have control? Fuck yeah. It’s also the perfect movie to watch with kids. It’s got all the fun stuff for them, nostalgia for adults, and at one point Speed Racer says “get that weak shit off my track” which I just think is fantastic. Speed Racer is a masterpiece and I’ll die on this hill. (My only complaint is the heavy CGI used when characters are outside, gives it a very Spy Kids/Cat in the Hat feel, but that was the norm back then)
