AHHHH BAAHAHAHAHHAAH WHAT THE FUCKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!! i used to be a little bit of a lanthimos hater (especially after poor things) but my god i cannot hate anymore. not only do we have a movie where people actually talk and act like humans, we got a whole brainfuck over the top epic masterpiece!!! I think i flipped at least 50 times over the course of the movie between thinking emma stone was a human or not (solid 45 of those in the last 10 minutes), and in the end i’m so glad she wasn’t. This movie is an exercise in empathy, you’re forced to empathize with people that you’d usually despise. And not only do you have empathy, you’re slowly starting to doubt whether maybe, just maybe, they are actually right. It’s risky having a movie where the conspiracy theorist was “right all along” and i do think a lot of people might interpret is as just that. But to me the most important aspect of the conclusion is that he wasn’t right all along. He had all of the pieces, knew something, or someone, was fucking up and destroying humanity terribly, he just pointed his finger to the wrong conclusion. It’s not the aliens, it’s human greed. So many people nowadays see all of the ways capitalism is fucking up us and the planet. conspiracy theorists are 99% there, it’s just that final 1% where they - usually out of fear for the truth - scream JEWS!!! IMMIGRANTS!!!! But that doesn’t mean the 99% before that is wrong, there IS something terribly wrong and there ARE people who are destroying humanity. And if we don’t do something quick, the atmosphere of our little flat earth will be (metaphorically) popped very very soon.
