Prisoners

Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. A technical masterpiece that thrives in its terrifyingly realistic atmosphere and stellar performances, you’ll struggle to find a film within this genre that leaves such an impact on you. It could be your first watch or your 100th and you’ll be bound to be just as impacted by it. Denis Villeneuve is a director who I’m so fond of and while I don’t think this is his best work, it’s still outstanding. Denis does such a great job here at creating this truly chilling and horrifying atmosphere utilising the darkness in such a way that it makes this mystery feel so much more authentic. The cast are all at the top of their game here as they all give what you could argue their career best performances. Jake Gyllenhaal is amazing as this anxiety inducing and tedious detective, really putting forward his ability to improvise and take a character right by the scruff of the neck. Hugh Jackman gives what is undoubtedly his career best as you really feel this undeniable authentic for his characters grief and determination.
