Gladiator
Seen on the big screen, been showing all week and still getting fully packed cinemas, and it might just be the greatest thing humanity has ever produced.
Those first 20 minutes especially. Perfection. Russell Crowe at his very best, and there’s maybe never been anyone better. Not to mention - this is Hans Zimmer’s best score and I will not be taking questions.
Pretty confident now that the sequel is gonna be fairly ass, sadly. Everything that makes this so good is gonna be sorely missed. Paul Mescal is great, but he’s not exactly commanding, and he’s certainly no Russell Crowe. The film is literally about Maximus and his revenge. Gladiator IS Maximus. And as for the surrounding world - it’s brilliant because of how authentic and real it feels, and in the world of modern cgi overloads, washed out colour grades, and on-set cost cutting, I just can’t see it being replicated. Hopefully I’m proved wrong. I haven’t lost all faith Ridley. Not yet.
