Midnight Mass
Decided to write down all my thoughts while rewatching this piece of beauty. If anyone gives a fuck lmao.
Episode 1 - 8/10
Mike Flanagan has such a wonderful mind for creating characters. He could easily create caricatures in his pieces, but makes true, raw characters. My favourite is probably Bev Keane, who is just exceptionally played by Samantha Sloyan, with so many micro aggressions in her performance, a wonderfully talented actress.
I also love his foreshadowing, as this is my second viewing, I love catching little moments that reveal, truly the entire plot in a way that makes a rewatch so much more engrossing.
Episode 2 - 8/10
Excellent opening one-shot. Establishes the theme of religion and using it to force your opinion. I dunno man I love this series so much.
Ugh he’s so fuckin good at showing plot without having to say anything. All he needs is a look. Wonderful.
Robert Longstreets portrayal of Joe is so fuckin heartbreaking man. Especially when his dog is poisoned.
Ugh I hate Bev so much by my good is she just an excellent character. The constant sucking up to the Monsignor is just perfectly done.
God I love all the miracles very slowly happening, I completely missed all of this in my first viewing.
Excellent ending. Never fuckin predicted it.
Episode 3 - 8/10
I love the major and his ideology that everything is due to his religion. It’s such a great character. ‘Why should we interrogate a miracle’
I think Rahul Kohli is so fuckin good man. He plays such an important role in this series and brings such a warmth and depth to it. Also Samantha Sloyan man. Might be one of my favourite performances ever.
The demon is so fuckin scary man but what a great introduction. Mike Flanagan is him.
Some of Flanagans shots in this are extremely good. Especially the cave. Hamish Linklater is a wonderful actor.
Episode 4 - 9/10
Bev Keane is so fuckin excellent man. Manipulative even to the people she idolises. How the heck does she do it folks?!
Zach Gilfords monologue with Kate Siegel in this is gorgeous. I know some people joke about Flanagan having too many monologues (I agree) but this one is just fantastic. Especially with the ‘Nearer my god to thee’ instrumental under it 😢
Okay fine Kate Siegel got me too. Fuck man I love this shit. Heartbreakingly perfect.
Joe did good 😭😭
BEV FUCKING KEANE MAN. SHE IS INSANE. AN EXCEPTIONALLY WRITTEN CHARACTER.
Bev trying to manipulate a man murdering and eating a homeless man, into a man of miracles following his god is just fuckin mental but I’m here for it.
Episode 5 - 7/10
Millie’s storyline is excellent and makes me greet anytime I think about it.
Hamish Linklater.
That ending man 😢😢😢
Episode 6 - 10/10
Rahul Kohli monologues are always so powerful man. What a man.
I know a lot of people don’t like Flanagans excessive monologue, however I feel all of them, or most, always feel earned and don’t pop out of nowhere without real reasoning.
Every movie should have a mob singing before the final act.
Hamish Linklater is utterly sensational in this. Everything he says you just feel so engrossed. Spectacular.
The angel reveal is just incredible.
The ending of this episode is so extreme but oh my god it’s fucking excellent.
Episode 7 - 9/10
I can’t lie, the rec centre looks kinda cozy.
Leeza makes me so fuckin sad man. What a horrible life’s she’s had 😢
I’m gonna scream man.
Just a gorgeous heartbreaking beautiful ending. Giving Ali and his dad a death with dignity and Bev a death of pain and regret. Fuckin poetic man. Mike Flanagan is him.
