happy birthday to me 🖤 *before watching this film, I had only seen two of Żuławski’s works («Possession» and «On the silver globe», both of which are in my top 20 favorite films of all time), and I think he is an absolutely unique director. usually, even if I like someone’s directorial style, I can still compare this director with someone and see the general details, but I really can’t compare him with anyone. the atmosphere he creates in his films and their visuals amaze me every time.* Żuławski recreated an image of a destroyed world on the verge of an apocalypse, inhabited by insane people awaiting the coming of the devil. what interesting is how the film explores the changing personalities and behaviors of people in an environment that literally has no moral compass. characters are torn between good and evil, while neither matters anymore with the arrival of the devil. it is like a fever dream. the story of the film itself is no less wonderful than its visuals, but it’s the way it is presented that makes you get into it. every frame is filled with darkness and anxiety. and the work with sound is excellent too. I just knew from the first second that it would be great. and I'll definitely rewatch this someday ** “this is the result, the essence of all morality, all laws. when you kill, you leave only a trail behind. thus yours is a work of purgation. purify.
