Kore-eda is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors. Watching this after his other film Nobody Knows was a thematic double whammy. Two diametrically opposing executions concerning the same theme of familial bonds as well as showcasing the underbelly of Japanese complicity. Kore-eda’s storytelling is delicate as always, even at its most heartbreaking moments it remains simple and intimate allowing the moment to permeate and speak for itself instead of force feeding you a melodramatic cliche scene telling you how to feel. Also have to give my flowers to Sakura Ando; have watched her in 3 films now where she gives the standout performance.
Would recommend watching this and Nobody Knows back to back.
