First Reformed
This is a deeply engrossing, engaging, and tragic film about a man overcome with the harshness of his reality. The plot and the way it’s structured is so interesting that it’s hard not to intensely care about everything that happens in this movie.
The cinematography subtly instills a very strong melancholic tone with the use of continuous still shots. The “magical mystery tour” being one of my favorite visual sequences in cinematic history.
The performances are also incredible, the obvious highlight being Ethan Hawke. The fact that the only main role I saw him in before this was moon knight makes this a very strong turnaround in terms of quality of performance.
The final minutes of this movie were some of the most tense I’ve ever felt watching a film in my entire life. Just a beautiful movie man.
I need to go on a magical mystery tour before I die.
