Oh my god man. Wow.
First of all, the opening of this film is probably the most effective opening in film history. The flag symbolism cut with the real world footage is just perfection. In fact the real world footage used throughout the whole movie makes everything hit so much harder.
The character development of Malcom is INCREDIBLE. It’s so well done and so poignant. I think it does take a little bit to get going(even then it’s still great) but MAN once it gets going it is straight peak. Of course, the performances. Obviously Denzel gives one of the best performances I’ve ever seen in my life. Like, it is truly hard to describe how perfect he is as Malcom X.. Angela Basset too man, holy shit. She is just so compelling. Fantastic on so many levels.
The editing is wonderful. That scene of Malcom sitting in the chair watching footage of MLK intercut while giving the speech was so powerful. There’s so many powerful scenes bro. That whole last stretch with the Sam Cooke song was incredible. The beauty in this film is endless.
This review could be pages long if I said everything I loved about this movie. This obviously hit me super hard personally as a black man in America, but this is a must watch for any human being. Countless excellent moments, perfectly written dialogue, beautiful cinematography, & powerful performances makes this an all timer. One of the single most impactful pieces of media I have ever seen. Masterpiece.
