Juno
I know the start of this review gives very much mumsnet food recipe (just get to the ingredients we don't need the life story), but I don't care! I enjoy journalling and no one is being forced to read it anyway!
I think the first time I watched this I was probably about Juno's age, doing a sweep of the classics (Whip It, Easy A, Napolean Dynamite etc). At the time I don't remember it being super impactful but that probably had more to do with watching it on an old laptop in the corner of the family living room than anything to do with the film.
Today I suddenly had a urge to return to it. To me, it has quite an autumnal energy and I'm slightly hungover and the weather is deliciously miserable. So I took the dog on a 3 hour walk to tire him out, dragged out the projector and settled in to watch this post macroni and cheese induced nap.
Simply incredible to be honest.
The script it tight, the acting is phenomenal, and it really has an emotional punch. Maybe it's the fact some of my friends are having children. The scene where Juno talks to her dad after leaving the couples fight is oscar award winning. The pain! The desperation! The sadness! Things! Don't! Always! Work! Out! Anyway I cried and cuddled the dog throughtout the last 20 minutes or so.
Despite the anquish, and the tragedy of it all it's also such a fun and hopeful film. Like shits happens you know? But I guess it'll be okay?
There's also something so real about this film. I think it might be a lot to do with costuming and set design. Juno's room design is so good?! The hamburger phone?! Bring it back! But it also didn't feel like it was trying super hard? Like "oh this is here to signify X" or she's mentioned Y so let's plaster her room with it. Impeccable. It's also so unique but also of the times. They truly don't make em like this anymore
P.S. I am seeing so much of Patti Smith at the moment I'm feeling quite cosmic about her
