Sinners
Every single thing about this film is perfect. The cinematography, story, characters, plot, everything. This is one of my favourite films rn.
I loved remmick so much, him despising oppression yet him turning them makes him vampires is a form of oppresson is perfect. I loved his backstory as well, while watching you don’t get much and that’s what’s best, mystery is what makes a villain good. After the film, learning about how he got to America and turned into a vampire is fascinating. It’s also really well cast knowing Connor O’riley is Irish as well. I think it added some freshness to the film with his accent and not that same American one you hear everywhere.
I think the cinematography makes this film, the way the format ratio changes depending on the scenes is genius, especially during the battle. The build up to the film is perfect, when I was first watching it I forgot it was a vampire film😭. It really does make you care about the characters and the flashbacks at the end kill me.
I love how they used religion in this film, painting it as another form of oppression is genius, especially with Remmick and Sammie both tying into it with their different encounters with it.
The music was so good as well like come on it’s a vibe. The scene where it swings around the juke joint showing all the spirits while sammie is playing ‘I lied to you’ is one of the best shots I’ve ever seen, that scene ALONE cements it as the best film this year.
If you’re deterred by this film for its use of religion you shouldn’t be. It doesn’t ‘mock’ religion in that sense, but more so challenges it. As sammies dsd was a pastor/priest whatever and forcing it on him as a child and these external forces such as delta slim and remmick providing different viewpoints on religion using their own experiences perfectly demonstrates what it’s like debating between what to ‘choose’ in that sense.
I also think the foreshadowing in this film is incredible, being this is my fourth rewatch theres so much to notice, such as smoke cant roll his own cigarettes as he has ptsd (shaky hands), and when sammie is running from remmick he has a blue moon on his left shoulder (smoke) and the orange/red glow of the joint above his right (stack) portraying the angel and devil on his shoulders is absolutely genius.
Going into this film with little to nothing known about it was incredible, I wish I could go back to seeing it in cinemas again for the first time. But if you’re going to watch it, watch it at home first so you can understand and appreciate it fully compared to not fully understanding it the first time (definitely not me).
I really do reccomend this film not even because of the points I’ve mentioned, because it tells a story not just of vampires, but of a community and family and all of these different choices we have to make throughout our lives.
10/10 film and I can’t wait to watch it on the 29th
