Nostalgia
Another Tarkovsky watch, another 5 star.
For me, Nostalghia is less a conventional film than a profound meditation on memory, exile, and spiritual longing. Following a Russian writer adrift in Italy, the film transforms homesickness into something far more universal: the ache of being disconnected from one’s past, faith, and sense of belonging.
Tarkovsky’s deliberate pacing and hypnotic long takes won’t appeal to everyone, but those willing to embrace its rhythm will find extraordinary rewards. Every image; shrouded in mist, rain, and decaying beauty - feels meticulously composed, turning landscapes into reflections of the characters’ inner lives. Oleg Yankovsky gives a deeply restrained performance, while Erland Josephson’s enigmatic Domenico provides the film’s philosophical soul.
The iconic candle-crossing sequence perfectly encapsulates Tarkovsky’s gift for finding immense emotional weight in the simplest of actions. Nostalghia demands patience rather than attention, contemplation rather than entertainment.
And surely that’s a top 5 final shot oat??
