The Killer
👀
Man I love these Hong Kong flicks!
John Woo’s The Killer is a film so unapologetically stylish it practically slow-motions through your bloodstream.
This isn’t just gunfights. It’s gunfights as opera!
Chow Yun-fat doesn’t walk into rooms; he glides, Beretta in each hand, coat billowing like he knows he’s about to redefine cool. Every shootout feels choreographed like a tragic ballet: doves exploding into flight, glass shattering like punctuation, bullets tracing arcs of loyalty and regret. The church finale alone should be preserved in a museum under “How to Make Action Cinema Transcendent.”
What makes it flipping good isn’t just the body count, it’s the sincerity.John Woo plays it absolutely straight. Brotherhood means everything. Honor matters. Melodrama isn’t dialled down; it’s turned up until it becomes mythic. The emotional stakes are so earnest they make the violence feel operatic rather than hollow.
And the chemistry between the killer and the cop hunting him? Electric. It’s less cat-and-mouse, more two warriors slowly realizing they’re reflections in the same cracked mirror. By the end, it’s weirdly tender for a movie that contains approximately one million rounds of ammunition.
Its influence is everywhere, but none of the imitators quite capture the feverish romanticism of the original..
