RIPLEY
an absolute masterclass in mystery and suspense. though i’ve seen the film i can undoubtedly say this series surpasses it.
andrew scott puts this show on his back, presenting one of the best performances i have seen, this show is a testament to the acting ability and range for scott. you can really see the conviction he puts into this character, fully embodying tom ripley to the utmost level.
i love that this show takes a whole new direction on this story than the film, which in turn made this show more thrilling and kept me at the edge of my seat. toneally, this ripley is a completely different character than the one we see in the film. this show’s ripley is highly methodically, precise but also volatile, and he knows exactly what he’s doing when he does it. a different take on the character that showcases him with a bit of a more psychopathic side. this really shakes things up as you don’t know if this is someone you would like to root for.
though this series is confined to the limits of black and white, it displays its visual prowess through its cinematography. one of the best looking shows i have seen in a long while. not only are cinematics utterly beautiful and breathtaking but also carry symbolic messages that adds layers to this series as how ripley is a layered character.
an odyssey of sorts that was thrilling, vibrant, and highly intellectual.
