Matilda
Matilda is about a child in a dysfunctional family from the moment she was born. When I was younger, I remember watching this movie in primary school. I adored her as she was a bookworm. The movie shown that she was not appreciated enough by her family and the principal except one teacher, Miss Honey.
The plot of story is clearly directed and targeted towards the children. The villains are really just villains, no sad backstory and they’re evil because they just are. The starting of the story is a bit too fast for me to follow through, I had to rewind it some times to catch what they were saying. However as the stories go on, it’s kind of obvious that there is this weird theme between the educated and uneducated as shown between Matilda/Ms Honey and Matilda’s family (father and mother never went to college, has to scam for a living/gamble to get easy money)/Mrs Trunchbull (Used to be decorated at sports, or technically a sports head). The villains in this movies are the uneducated or the ones who are too stubborn to dedicate themselves. If I had to say it feels like it’s painted in a black and white theme. Pretty reasonable for a kids movie.
One of my favourite moments and realization was that, TV game shows back in the 90s is the equivalence of today’s brain rot. TV isn’t all huge these days either. Another favourite moment of mine is the beginning montage of Matilda learning to be independent and taking care of herself as her parents were selfish and had their interests at heart as priority over their daughter. The third moment is when she made friends with Lavender, Bruce and the other kids. I love how she cheered on for Bruce when he was forced to eat a big cake which rallied the other children to cheer on for him as well. The last is her relationship with Ms Honey. It must be so relieving to have a proper adult that doesn’t accuse things blindly for Matilda. Ms Honey is also technically the first adult that Matilda feels safe around enough that she told Ms Honey about her powers. Also I guess it makes sense since Ms Honey seems like the adult version of Matilda.
I felt nostalgic watching this movie again. The kid wonders kind of feel. Honestly I’m just glad they wrapped up the movie kind of nicely. The villains deserving what they deserved was more than satisfying enough.
