2001: A Space Odyssey
A film that should be considered art more than any other film.
Made a year before the actual moon landing, yet it encapsulates space exploration, alien life and artificial intelligence as we still know it today.
It introduces us to the thought of higher life forms interacting with humans.
They appear in the form of a monolith, as early as when humans were still monkeys.
It causes early humans to start evolving by using tools.
The next time humans meet the monolith is when they begin to explore the cosmos.
The astronauts grow suspicious of HAL; they think about turning him off for the safety of the mission. Little do they know, HAL is thinking the same about them.
Then the film turns from Sci-Fi to Horror.
The scenes where HAL doesn't let Dave in the ship, or when Dave turns HAL off, hold up great.
The ending is up to your interpretation.
But the one making the most sense is Dave being influenced by the emitted signal when arriving near Jupiter.
He then ends up in a living space created by the higher life forms.
They do not reveal themselves because they are in a different dimension of existence.
Not 3D but 4D, which is said to be time itself. That explains Dave's rapid aging.
The monolith appearing near Dave's death evolves him into a higher being.
He is sent near Earth to message something to humans, or to also lead them to evolution.
Same as the monolith did with using tools.
The film is timeless.
These are some concrete reasons why:
- HAL9000, being an all-knowing AI computer, was relevant then and is today more than ever before.
- The quality of the camera doesn't make it look outdated.
- The cinematography is literal art.
- The music used is so universally known that everyone watching will know it.
- The whole message of space exploration, computers, AI, and alien life will ultimately be relevant from 1968 until forever , because we will always evolve, invent, discover and deal with space.
