Ocean's Eleven
They might as well call it Whitejack!
Listen, it's a miracle I'd not been hooked on this franchise before.
I love a audacious heist or spy thriller more than anything, with Mission: Impossible and Now You See Me being a few of my vices. Ocean's Eleven is like the perfect encapsulation of everything I should theoretically like about the Now You See Me films (which I already enjoy as middling movies without much guilt) but executed to perfection. It's slick, it's smart, it's star-studded, and it's a Steven Soderbergh joint. It can't get better than this.
I think it's crazy I haven't ventured down Clooney's way too often. I just get relentlessly charmed by him (I mean, that's his whole deal, right?) and I think I'd like to watch him do anything. This is my second Damon in a row and he's still terrific here. Brad Pitt is an excellent #2, Bernie Mac is the 6th Man of the Year, Don Cheadle's accent work is my personal favourite performance by a Don, and then of course, Julia Roberts is a megastar with a magnetic presence that I hope to see more in the next two.
People like to make the distinction between films, cinema and movies, (and Marty's choice, pictures), but I think more consideration needs to be placed on the term flicks. It's often seen as an almost demeaning term. "Chick flicks" is often used as a way to denigrate or demote films targeted to women as lesser, but I think the Flick is an important thing. We need flicks, films that have the main goal of entertaining and do a damn good job at it. We don't need slop, we don't need Free Guy, Red One, Deadpool and Wolverine, any of that – we need more Ocean's.
And damn, that was a terrific ending. Loved this to death.
