Training Day
Yeah this would've absolutely changed my whole life if I saw this at the age of 12 holy shit
I must admit Training Day has many flaws. It can get convoluted and messy, it can be a bit nonsensical, and David Ayer isn't exactly a modern day Shakespeare. The script gets worse the longer you interrogate much of Alonzo's actions. The fact of the matter is: when you get a director like Antoine Fuqua with this level of pure sauce and mix in an unbelievable Denzel performance, you have to bow down.
That last 30 or so minutes is some of the most electric filmmaking you'll ever see in your life. The other 90 minutes are great, but everything just clicks and the film becomes legend with that last confrontation between Alonzo and Hoyt. I knew every line of Denzel's King Kong speech already – I mean, how could you not? And still, his delivery and the buildup gave me full body chills. He's just the greatest to ever do it.
It says something that this film has two of my three favourite actors in Denzel and Ethan Hawke, yet I can barely say anything about Hawke's genuinely great performance without it being blown out of the water by Denzel absolutely putting his pedal to the metal. Genuine, pure gold, almost unmatched performance here by the greatest to ever step foot on a screen. A1 movie star, thespian, character actor, comedic actor, action hero, everything. If it was anyone else as Alonzo, this may as well be a 3.5/5.
First 4K Blu-ray fully watched on the Panasonic UB-820. Looked stunning, and the HDR presentation was gorgeous on my Mini-LED TV. Dolby Atmos really shines in high octane shootouts, and this film delivers in spades.
